Higher Education Department to tackle NSFAS allowance issues

The Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Training, Yusuf Cassim will be engaging with student leaders and UNISA management on Thursday, 9 July to discuss NSFAS allowances issues.

The engagement will take place at University of South Africa (UNISA) Muckleneuk Campus in Pretoria.

This comes after students complained through Deputy Minister’s helpdesk regarding delays in NSFAS allowance payments and the discontinuation of data allowances.

Cassim, together with the university management, will assess mixed reports on the causes of delays in the payment of NSFAS allowances and the impact of scrapping the data allowance for distance-learning students.

As his first public engagement, he felt it important to gain a firsthand understanding of the NSFAS allowances issue and the measures taken to address the challenges effectively.

Cassim will be accompanied by senior officials from the The Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) and NSFAS.
