”As the globe commemorates International Women's Day with the theme "Accelerate Action“

- Nigerian model and beauty queen Chidimma Adetshina is sharing her journey to inspire resilience and solidarity.

Adetshina, who originally focused on the runway instead of pageantry, remembers the moment that altered her trajectory. Motivated by the 2017 Miss Universe Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters, she chose to pursue the competition scene in 2024.

"I never actually had a desire to participate in pageantry," she confesses. "However, I established a goal for myself when I witnessed Demi-Leigh on the Miss Universe stage." "I aspired to be like her, to become a queen."

Nevertheless, her journey was filled with challenges. Speaking openly, Adetshina underscores the prejudices that women frequently encounter in different sectors.

“The initial step is to recognize that biases and prejudices are present,” she states. "Once we acknowledge that, we can begin discovering methods to manage and conquer them." Honoring diversity is essential—it encompasses not only culture but also religion, identity, and heritage. "Inclusion enhances our strength."

For Adetshina, determination is a consistent motif. She acknowledges there have been moments when she thought about quitting, doubting if her efforts were meaningful.

"There are moments when I think, ‘When will I finally have some time off?’” she expresses. “It’s challenging because the motivations that fuel me are often the same ones that occasionally seem unattainable.” However, I remind myself that there is still one more individual to motivate.

Her message to women this International Women’s Day is unmistakable: in spite of challenges, continue moving ahead. "I am here not merely as Chidimma Adetshina, but as an emblem of hope and belief." "I've battled not just for my own sake but for Africa," she states.

While the world contemplates this year's theme, Adetshina's narrative serves as a strong reminder.

”That’s my origin.

I emerge from the shadows and the stillness. Money has taken precedence since logic was restricted to psychiatry.“

Where art is disrespected when it is female, where money dominates with force, and the most vulnerable man is satisfied to sink in the stream of their sorrows.

These are the words written and articulated by poet Esther Abumba, who lives in the conflict-ridden Democratic Republic of Congo. At 23 years old, Esther has selected slam as her means to convert suffering and inequality into a message of optimism.

"I selected slam because, to me, slam signifies more than just words." For myself and for everyone else who participates in slam, perhaps. Slam is straightforward. It's an initiative. In reality, it serves as a resource that empowers us to combat daily, existing in a community characterized by conflict. Slam enables us to articulate and to personally heal, she states.

Esther describes the art form as therapeutic, noting that many of her fellow slam poets address the theme of conflict in their work.

Frequently, they are ten, eleven, or fourteen years of age. "Interestingly, their focus has been solely on war, conflict, violence towards women, and injustice," she states.

"I believe that young individuals require platforms, they need areas to voice their thoughts, and most importantly, they need to utilize a powerful tool to combat injustice." And that’s where the function of the slam becomes important, dismantling injustice with language.

The poet aspires that her work can contribute to altering specific narratives about women in the nation. She’s urging other women to follow suit.

"I have faith in the transformative ability of women." I think that women possess this.

Share details about your initiative to promote sports in the DRC.

I aimed to contribute something, beginning with my own nation. I purchased a basketball team in France and a women’s team as well. I created an academy to nurture talent. The leader of my team, who has been with ASVEL for a decade, hails from Congo. A player of mine, Dominique Malonga, hails from Congo as well.

Last year, we conducted a trial with a young athlete from Congo. He was the inaugural player to transition directly from Congo to the Euroleague and formalize a professional agreement with us. I told myself we could achieve something with this nation. There is considerable potential present.

Many young individuals here, via shared acquaintances, have mentioned to me that they simply require a space to articulate themselves. To attempt and achieve, attaining the utmost level. I chose to visit and speak with the President and several ministers to explore how, alongside my team, I could contribute the skills, insights, and support needed to mentor and motivate these young individuals.

Did President Tshisekedi endorse this initiative?

Indeed, quite positively. He is a huge sports enthusiast and is very passionate about it. It’s clear that he desires to contribute to his nation. We will get along exceptionally well since I share the same enthusiasm and energy. 

You motivated many young individuals in Africa during your time with the San Antonio Spurs. What led you to select the DRC among all the African nations?

It was by means of shared friends and connections. It is a lovely nation, and I thought to myself that the sole way to discover was to visit this place. That is the reason I am present.

The DRC along with numerous African nations has millions of youth who are passionate about sports. Several of these youths lack the chance to grow and compete in premier leagues as you have experienced. What advice do you offer to these young individuals who aspire to play in the NBA for teams such as the San Antonio Spurs, the Boston Celtics, or the Lakers?

You should continue to dream big. You should aspire to great things. I often advise the young people at my academy: if you share your dream and nobody laughs at you, you aren't dreaming boldly enough. I believe that for these young individuals, it is essential to continue dreaming.

Many elements are arranged for their success. The NBA puts substantial resources into Africa. Many individuals are attempting to accomplish it in their unique manner, striving to create and offer chances for the youth. I aim to attempt to achieve similar goals for the youth of Congo.

As an NBA champion, you are in a strong position to advocate for significant causes worldwide.

This nation has experienced strife for over thirty years. Approximately 7 million individuals are presently displaced due to a continuing conflict in the east. Would you be willing to advocate for peace if the officials here requested you to serve as an ambassador of sorts?

Raised in Uganda, where more than 860,000 women are affected by HIV, Gloria’s story exemplifies not only survival but also the strength of hope, advocacy, and self-acceptance.

At the age of 11, Gloria experienced a change in her life that might have muted her. She learned that she was HIV positive, a truth that risked trapping her in a life of concealment and anxiety. However, rather than letting stigma control her, she changes the dialogue.

Currently, as an international human rights attorney, a representative for UNICEF, and the creator of the Global Young Positive Foundation, she has committed her life to breaking down myths regarding HIV and enabling youth to take control of their stories.

Her path to self-acceptance was filled with challenges. She encountered murmurs, criticism, and exclusion. The burden of stigma began to feel overwhelming during her time in school.

Whispers regarding her situation circulated rapidly, distancing her from peers and friends. Gloria, nonetheless, declined to diminish. In 2017, she seized her narrative by participating in and winning the Miss Y+ pageant, which aims to empower youth living with HIV. This moment represented more than a crown; it was a proclamation that she would no longer be muted.

Via her foundation, she has led efforts such as Meet Your Kind, establishing safe environments where youth living with HIV can interact, discover love, and cultivate relationships without discrimination.

She experiences firsthand the difficulties of dating while having HIV, including the heartbreak, discrimination, and rejections, yet she is aware that love, in its truest essence, rises above fear.
