Founded by Nigerian innovators Fela Buyi Adeyemi and Yewande Adeyemi, Salubata is redefining sustainability by transforming plastic waste into stylish, customizable footwear. Based in Lagos, the startup blends eco-conscious manufacturing with sleek urban design, offering a bold African answer to global plastic pollution. 

How the Process Works

Salubata collects plastic waste from cities across Nigeria and melts it down using eco-friendly methods. The resulting material is turned into durable, lightweight shoe components. The shoes are modular meaning users can swap out soles or tops, reducing the need to buy new pairs and extending product life. 

A Social and Environmental Mission 

Salubata isn’t just about recycling, it’s about building circular economies. The company sources materials through partnerships with local waste collectors, many of whom are women and youth. It also reinvest profits into waste education and youth entrepreneurship programs. 

To date Salubata has repurposed over 120,000 plastic bottles and aims to reach 5 million by 2027. 

International Recognition and Growth 

The startup has gained international traction, winning awards from MIT Solve, Cisco Global Problem Solver Challenge, and the Roddenberry Foundation. It has also exported shoes to more than 20 countries and is expanding into East Africa and Europe.
