Rand Water will undertake the second phase of its planned maintenance on Friday, 17 July from 07:00 to 19:00.
Customers are reminded to prepare for the water disruptions.
According to Rand Water, the work undertaken will be electrical work conducted by Eskom on Rand Water’s Zuikerbosch substation. The first phase of the maintenance took place from 29 May to 2 June 2026 and was successfully completed.
In a statement released, Rand Water said, “The 12-hour maintenance window is scheduled from 07:00 to 19:00. This will involve essential electrical work by Eskom at the Zuikerbosch substation along with other critical upgrades. The work will reduce pumping capacity into several Johannesburg Water systems, leading to low water pressure or intermittent supply in affected areas during the maintenance period.”
Affected Johannesburg Water systems include Sandton, Midrand, Linksfield, South Hills, Crown Gardens, Commando, which encompasses Brixton, Crosby, and Hursthill, Randburg, Roodepoort, Soweto, and Lenasia.
“Residents supplied by these systems should expect low pressure for the duration of the 12-hour maintenance. Johannesburg Water has urged customers to use water sparingly during this time.”
Full recovery of the network is not expected immediately after maintenance ends. Reservoirs will need time to refill, with system stabilisation potentially taking several days depending on demand.
The city mentioned that they will provide alternative water supply through tankers where necessary, with priority given to schools, clinics, and old-age homes. Further details on tanker locations will be communicated closer to the date via official channels and ward councillors.
“Residents should store enough water for essential household needs in clean containers with tight-fitting lids and keep stored water in a cool, dark place. Water should be used sparingly for cooking, drinking, and hygiene while avoiding non-essential use, such as garden irrigation or car washing, during the period.”
Rand Water’s maintenance forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the region’s bulk water infrastructure for long-term reliability.
“Once maintenance has been completed, Rand Water will resume normal pumping operations. However, the recovery of Johannesburg Water’s network will be gradual as reservoirs refill, system pressure is restored, and water supply stabilises across the network. Full system recovery is expected to take approximately five to seven days, depending on demand and system performance.”
“Johannesburg Water will implement measures to reduce the impact on affected residents by providing alternative water where required, in coordination with Ward Councillors. Further communication, including affected areas and alternative water supply locations, will be provided closer to the maintenance date.”
